How to Keep your Silver Shining -- Care, Cleaning and Storage Tips

Silver has a soft and timeless style that is always popular, whether you're mixing metals or wearing all one type, it's a classic. But do you ever wonder why your silver jewelry changes color, or "tarnishes" after you have stored it away?  Or why it reacts differently to the same conditions, as say, your gold jewelry? That is because sterling silver is a "living metal", a metal that reacts to the elements -- air, our skin and water to name a few.

Whether you're looking to wear a piece that needs a fresh shine, or want to ensure your favorite silver necklace gets stored away safely -- let's break down silver care.

Simple is Best -- Clean Gently

A simple solution of soap and water is best to start. Mix a few drops of dish soap (Dawn is fantastic) with warm water. Soak the silver for a few minutes, then wipe clean with a soft cloth. Be sure not to use anything abrasive, as it will scratch the soft metal. Dry completely before storing.

This gentle method is ideal for silver jewelry that is mildly tarnished or pieces that include gemstones that you do not want to clean with any chemicals.

Using a Polishing Cloth

Silver naturally tarnishes overtime as it reacts to air, but one of easiest ways to bring back its shine is by using a polishing cloth. Polish carefully as you do not want to bend or damage the soft metal with too much pressure, as you see the tarnish disappear onto your cloth.

Be careful not to wipe away intentional darkening of some jewelry, like on some David Yurman pieces, as this is part of the design.

Avoid Harsh Methods

Skip using anything abrasive, with a rough texture or grit. For example, toothpaste, baking soda and vinegar (the acid) will damage finishes and scratch silver. This will lower the resale value and condition of the piece. If in doubt of the method, consult a professional.

Store It With Care

Storing your silver can make all the difference to maintaining its shine. Proper storage keeps silver jewelry looking fresher longer:

  • Store you silver away from humidity (not in the bathroom)
  • Do not store your silver in leather bags or boxes as this speeds up the tarnishing process
  • Store pieces in separate bags to avoid scratches
  • Storing in air tight bags like ziplocs, although not elegant, is excellent for maintaining the longevity of the shine -- and also a great hack for travel!

Wear Your Silver Often

And finally, the biggest hack for keeping your silver looking like-new for longer is by wearing the piece often. Our skin's natural oils help to slow tarnish, meaning your favorite piece can stay looking stylish with regular wear.

Why Jewelry -- and Silver Care Matters in Resale

In the world of luxury resale condition is key. Whether you are keeping your silver jewelry for a lifetime, passing it on to a loved one, or wanting to resell at a later time, it is always in your best interest to care for and maintain its quality. When silver is bright, clean and cared for it earns the highest dollar, and photographs well -- whether worn by you or ready for resale!
